“Is it always this bad?” she asked.
Father Wind swirled around her, murmuring comfort as he blew soothing cold air off the lake across her back.
“Don't be a baby.” Sister Rain wept. “It gets worse.” Even so, she dropped cool, fat tears onto Kethae's heated skin.
A miasma of agony enveloped Kethae's torso and she fell to her knees with a long, plaintive wail as the skin of her back oscitated from top to bottom. Something wet slithered out of the split.
Mother Moon smiled down at her from the black velvet sky.
“Come, my child,” she whispered. “Come to me.”
“Yes you can, love,” Mother Moon said. “Look.”
Father Wind's cool breath fanned across her back to the sound of rustling silk. Kethae rose, shrugging off her old skin, and marveled at the synchronicity of her new gossamer wings, mirrored in the lake.
